You’re just a click away from reading about their day, learning about their current job, or looking at pictures of their newest baby. People with lots of acquaintances and old friends to keep in touch with benefit a lot from the ease of social networking. It’s even better for people who have family all over the country. Rather than catching up just on holidays, you can keep up with your family’s lives via the Internet.

Making new friends is also easier with the aid of the Internet. Meeting someone new at a party used to mean that you had a new acquaintance that you might run into again. With Facebook and similar sites, it’s easy to look up someone you met and become friends with them. Social networking gives you the chance to connect with new friends, make plans with them, and create lasting friendships.

It’s important to use the Internet for social networking in moderation. If it’s your only method of socialization, it’s not necessarily healthy. However, in general, using the Internet to stay in touch with old friends and make new friends is a great way to enrich your social life.

Programming The Human Mind

This might be my imagination, but I believe that programming of the human mind largely happens up to the approximate age of ten years. Most of the learning up to this age is retained and used by the mind for the rest of the life of the human. Beyond the age of ten, further programming is added to the mind in the form of specific skills as the person grows older. These are add-ons. This process continues for the whole life, with older programming sometimes getting updated, or edited.

In some cases, where the brain receives a jolt, some of this programming might even get corrupted, altered, or entirely deleted. This is when people need to be taken to shrinks, who doctor the human mind to get it to the normal working condition again. Shrinks make big money, and are always in great demand. It seems quite a few people are getting their brains knocked around, on a regular basis.

A peep into the human mind is a long cherished aspiration of all kinds of professionals, who would just love to dig in to learn more about how the brain functions, and also to get to the thoughts and the programming inside the brain. People come up with all kinds of weird theories, and explanations, and even burn up money by the billions to research the human mind.

As technology develops, more advanced methods are used to study the brain functions. Logically, studies might also be conducted on how the programming of the mind could be altered, deleted, or rewritten. We are perhaps now living in the age of science fiction, and the future might see human minds being remotely controlled, or replaced, or retrofitted, or even switched off. Computer Gets Hijacked

The other day when my computer was connected to the internet, I found some furious activity in the modem, even though I had not started any downloads yet. I wondered if it was Microsoft at it again with their usual automatic monthly downloads. I soon realized that we were well past the second Tuesday of the month when these downloads happen from Microsoft. Perhaps it was some other software getting automatically updated, I wondered. Since my computer was protected with the latest antivirus package, I did not worry about this, and got on with my work.

Several hours later, when I had put my computer on standby to take a break, I heard some disk activity from my computer. I rushed to the computer and again found the lights on the modem violently flickering, and my computer seemed to be fully active even though it was supposed to be on standby. I tapped one of the keys to get the computer back to the active mode, and sat back to take a good look at what was happening.

What I saw nearly made me jump out of my skin. Some files were open. The mouse was moving all around, stopping for a moment here and there. Some files closed and others opened. I tried to move the mouse, but I had no control over it, it seemed to be moving by itself. What do I do without the mouse? I kept clicking the mouse, hoping it would start working. Right-click, then left-click, click, click, click, but the mouse did not follow my commands. My mind stopped working. I took a deep breath and waited, hoping it would start working again, and all the time the mouse was working on the screen, as if controlled by someone else.

After what seemed an eternity, my mind started racing again. I pushed the start button and kept it pressed, the usual command for emergency shutdown. Five seconds passed, and nothing happened. Be patient, I thought, and kept the button pressed. Even after a minute nothing happened. I was in a panic.

The Business Card

They seemed to be all around my office, and even my home – those small, rectangular pieces of thick paper, with stuff printed on them in many different styles and colors. Are these visiting cards? Yep, most people now refer to these as ‘business’ cards, though. Some business cards were printed on both sides, some even had a flap which could fold over to provide additional space for printing. Most were to be held horizontally to read them, while some had to be held vertically for reading. All thicknesses of paper were used. I remember many were even on thin flexible plastic sheets, the ones that were impossible to tear with bare hands, and could only be cut with scissors.

Some cards even needed a magnifying glass to get to the fine print. Is this the reason why we keep getting wrong numbers on the phone? This seems an important insight for business owners, perhaps. Any graphic designer looking for logo designs would have loved to glance at my collection. Most business cards had a logo. Some logos were too small to be deciphered by the naked eye, and looked more like insects sitting on the card, or like a small black fly waiting to take off from the card. Then there were the large logos, the ones that loudly stared at you from the business card, leaving little space for other particulars of the card owner.

Logos were in all combinations of colors and designs, and located at all possible locations, in the corners, middle, and some even on the reverse side. A few business cards even had the photograph of the person on it, smug and smiling. Some technology buffs seem to have presented me their electronic business cards. These come equipped with a micro CD at the back, and you can insert this in the CD drive of your computer and read the contents on your computer screen. In addition to the particulars of the person, a brief of their company’s business profile was usually found on such cards. But this style did not take off.

Use of HTML for Keyword Placement

Proper use of HTML is essential not only for the development of webpages and blogs, but also to convince search engines that the site has relevant information and is worthy of being ranked. One of the least used areas of the page for search engine optimization is the webpage title.

Search engines don’t care about how clever your title is, or how you may have used big words to impress your audience. What these search engines do care about is locating keywords. It is suspected that Google’s search engines don’t look past the first 120 characters of any title, and it is believed that the use of punctuation in your title will count as some of those first 120 characters. Like looking for Los Angeles apartments, the search engine crawlers don’t want to spend much effort looking for your keywords. Therefore, it is very important to choose your title so that Google will take those keywords into consideration when ranking your site.

HTML is invisible to the readers, but the author of the site needs to ensure that the site’s title and description adequately contain the keywords within the first 120 characters. Don’t stuff your title or description; the search engine only needs to find it once and it doesn’t care how many times you use it, but your readers might!

Make your title and description interesting and relevant to your site. It should be a kind of teaser, enticing people to click on the link to go to your site. This is the first exposure a reader will have to your site and if you want to gain organic traffic then you need to give them a reason to click on your link.

Understanding the basic use of HTML to properly place your keywords in the site’s title and description is imperative to ranking well with the search engines.
