What Is The Importance Of Internet?

Science and technology have evolved manifold in the past few decades. With the growth of technology, the development of internet has also become enormous. This age is truly referred to as the age of the internet where each and everything in the world depends on the use of internet. The professional and personal life of the people can witness the necessity of internet in a larger scale.

Internet has made life easier for everyone, be it a student or a career oriented person. a person can now access limitless information and news of their choice just at the simple click of a button. Knowing more about a subject and getting reference materials is no longer meant only for a selected few. Now a majority of the population can find requisite information from anywhere in the world at any point of time. Internet also transcends societal boundaries as its usage is not only limited to the upper crust of the society. People from even the middle class are nowadays increasingly using internet for various purposes. With globalization spreading all across the world, people from more or less every strata of the society are able to use computers and internet.

Hence internet is one aspect which has spread its wings far and wide without differentiating between the various segments of the societal structure. The beauty of internet also lies in the fact that it is not only about gathering information. You can do a large number of activities with the help of an internet connection. Be it games, entertainment, sports, politics and culture, there is hardly any sphere. Social networking is one of the boons of the modern day internet which is playing a significant role in shaping up the values and decision of the people from all over the world thus leading to far reaching changes in the world.

Programming The Human Mind

This might be my imagination, but I believe that programming of the human mind largely happens up to the approximate age of ten years. Most of the learning up to this age is retained and used by the mind for the rest of the life of the human. Beyond the age of ten, further programming is added to the mind in the form of specific skills as the person grows older. These are add-ons. This process continues for the whole life, with older programming sometimes getting updated, or edited.

In some cases, where the brain receives a jolt, some of this programming might even get corrupted, altered, or entirely deleted. This is when people need to be taken to shrinks, who doctor the human mind to get it to the normal working condition again. Shrinks make big money, and are always in great demand. It seems quite a few people are getting their brains knocked around, on a regular basis.

A peep into the human mind is a long cherished aspiration of all kinds of professionals, who would just love to dig in to learn more about how the brain functions, and also to get to the thoughts and the programming inside the brain. People come up with all kinds of weird theories, and explanations, and even burn up money by the billions to research the human mind.

As technology develops, more advanced methods are used to study the brain functions. Logically, studies might also be conducted on how the programming of the mind could be altered, deleted, or rewritten. We are perhaps now living in the age of science fiction, and the future might see human minds being remotely controlled, or replaced, or retrofitted, or even switched off. Switching off the human mind shall be an interesting achievement, since the constant brain chatter even during sleep has been found.

The Internet Addiction

A few decades back, when the internet was not so popular, getting some minor information used to be among the most difficult tasks in the world. It was usual for people to phone all their contacts till they got the information they wanted. Sometimes people would even wait several days till they could personally visit those who they believed could provide them the information, and then after a bit of other small talk, try to get the information they wanted.

Getting information seemed to be an important activity, and this gave all kinds of people a feeling of self-importance knowing that they had some information which people might need. This probably made people contact each other a lot more often, in addition to the mere needs of socializing. Since people of all ages and backgrounds need all kinds of information, this need made society a more closely held group of people who were always interacting with each other for the purpose of either seeking information, or providing information.

The internet has changed all that. Now people do not need to ask anyone for any information. The search engine has replaced vast segments of society who were providers of information till yesterday. This has probably resulted in fewer phone calls, less fuel being burnt to zip across town in the car to get that information, and less time wasted in socializing in the real world for the purpose of seeking information. People simply need to access the internet through their computers, get to the search engine, and feed in their keywords – and all the information they could possibly need is just a click away.

The internet has thus not only provided a life-changing experience for people, but has also altered the manner in which society functions as a whole at a broad level. People who realize the power of the internet are often accused of having become social recluses and internet addicts. The addiction is understandable, since only the internet can fulfill their needs, not only for information, but also for socializing which is a lot easier now.

Internet And Online Shopping

The invention of computer has given rise to a large number of benefits for the common people. We are able to do a lot of things with a computer like writing, listening and even reading. The usage of computer has increased with the internet gradually evolving. Now a major part of our life depends on how we use computer and internet. Shopping is one of the spheres which is gradually coming out of the traditional format and giving rise to the online mode. Nowadays there are a large number of websites which are using the benefits of the extreme demand for shopping online.

Online shopping is now one of the most coveted systems of shopping meant for people who are busy for most part of the day. In recent times we can see people becoming extremely busy in their day to day affairs and hence do not find time for shopping. In such circumstances online shopping acts as a boon. You simply need to have a computer and an internet connection in order to avail the advantages of online shopping. There are quite a few websites which solely cater to the various requirements and demands of the customers.

Some of the websites offer a wide selection of products ranging from books to gadgets to clothing items. Some websites are meant for providing only a particular type of item. While shopping online you have the option of checking the various aspects of the products you are willing to buy. The websites provide an overview of the products, the cost of the products and also pictures so as to make the decision making process easier. You can now enjoy shopping from the comfort.

Accessing the Internet Wirelessly

If you own a laptop computer, you probably love the convenience of being able to use it all around your home and also being able to take it to work. It can be so helpful to do your work from the dinner table, pay your bills in bed, and do research in the commercial breaks of your favorite television show. You may even enjoy being able to play games on your computer during your lunch break, or while relaxing on the couch.

But, one of the benefits of a laptop computer that many people overlook is the ability to truly work on the go. This is possible now, more than ever, with the prevalence of WiFi hotspots around the community.

While the expectation is that you can access the internet at libraries, coffee shops and maybe at schools, there are WiFi hotspots available at places you may not have even considered. One of my favorite little watering holes offers free WiFi. I love being able to bring my computer down and follow my favorite sports team while enjoying a drink with my friends. It’s also nice to be able to go down and have a nice meal at lunch and do some of my work in a more comfortable environment than a stuffy coffee shop.

No matter where you choose to access the internet using a WiFi hotspot, you are sure to appreciate this added benefit of owning a laptop computer. If you don’t know how to connect to a wireless internet connection, make sure you check with your computer’s manufacturer to find out the steps. In my case it is very simple and involves only a few mouse clicks. Sometimes you may need a password, check with the owner or manager of the location you are trying to access and they will likely be able to provide you with the information you need.

Advancing Internet Technology

The internet has been a major part of our lives for around 15 years now. Before then, it had been around in some form since the 1960’s, but it really never entered our homes or our lives until the mid 1990’s. In the early days, the internet was frustrating; however, we all saw the benefits this new technology could offer us and embraced it anyhow.

When the internet first started gaining popularity, the only type of internet connection available was a dial-up connection. This took about 5 minutes to even connect to the provider and even then it tied up your phone line while you were using the internet.

Once you were finally online, the frustration didn’t end there. The dial up connection was slow. If you tried to go to a web page that had many graphics, pictures or even lots of data it could take a long time to load the full page. Playing games online was also very difficult. Games like we experience today with multiple players and graphic intensive layouts would be all but impossible to have played in the mid 1990s.

By the time 2000 arrived we were ready for something else, and that is when DSL and cable internet started becoming popular. These means of connecting to the internet didn’t tie up your phone line and would allow the user to surf the web at many times the speed that a dial up connection provided.

Once a high speed connection became the norm, the internet really became what it is today. In many homes there is at least one person browsing online, playing games, or visiting a social network at any given time. The internet is used by adults and children alike for work and play. We can now even access the internet in the palm of our hand with the newest smart phones; now that is something that would have amazed up back in the dial up days.

A Brief History of Search Engines

One of the most used types of WebPages on the internet is one that we take for granted. The search engine is such an important part of our web browsing experience that we sometimes forget how useful it really is.

A search engine allows us to categorize and make sense of the information that is available online. If there was no search engine you would have to know the exact web address of any site you wanted to visit. This would make finding new information very hard.

Lucky for us the search engine was invented. The first search engines began being created in 1993. There were several early pioneers in search engines that we owe a lot of the credit to. These include Martijn Kojer and Matthew Grey. The first commercial search engine program was called ALIWEB. It allowed users to submit their pages and crawled pages looking for meta information. This worked out well because it did not take up an extraordinarily large amount of bandwidth.

Later in the same year Excite was created. This was one of the first search engines that tried to make sense of the data and create a web directory. This idea would be put into place more commercially by Yahoo a couple of years later. In the mid 1990s there were hundreds of search engines, but the two big players were Yahoo and Lycos.

In 1996 Google was invented. It didn’t make a splash at first, but over time they have included features in their search engine that separated them from the pack. Their intuitive search features helped eliminate spam in the search results and their clean webpage was an oasis in an overcrowded internet. By the year 2001, Google was head and shoulders above the crowd, and at least for now they retain their crown as king of the search engine wars.

Social Networks

One of the most popular types of websites on the Internet today are social networks. These pages are a great way for people to stay connected to their family and friends as well as playing games and following their favorite celebrities and products. We tend to take for granted the different benefits these Websites provide, we forget that just a few years ago being able to do all these things in one place was an unheard of idea.

First and foremost, social networking sites were created to allow people to stay in contact with their loved ones. It’s amazing to me that I can easily know what is going on with old school friends, out of state relatives and my co-workers all on my homepage. I can also exchange jokes or chat with my good friends in a very easy manner. Sure, I could pick up the phone and call all these people, but I probably wouldn’t.

Another great use of the social networks is game play. There are many companies that have made detailed, interesting games that have as many or more regular players than stand alone games. The rise of the casual game has gone along hand in hand with the rise of the social networks. Casual games are the type of game that anyone can pick up and start playing, like puzzle games or Farmville.

The final major use of social networks is to follow your favorite celebrities or products. On Twitter, for example you can follow celebrities and you’ll get a notice every time they tweet something. This may be interesting and it may be mundane, but it gives you an up close and personal look at celebrities that has never been possible. Following products happens in much the same manner, and can be a great way to stay informed in certain circles.

The Growth of the At-Home Worker

Teleworking is becoming a very important part of many offices. A few years ago, it seemed like a dream for many commuters to be able to work from home part of the time. Now this is a reality that is becoming more prevalent every day.

The concept of working from home has been around for many years, but only recently has technology moved forward to the point that much of the work that is done in an office setting can be done at home. This became a possibility almost entirely because of the Internet.

Currently, many homes are equipped with high speed Internet. This will allow the worker to log online and access their business email, and handle many communications at home. But the real advances have been in Internet software that allows true work to take place.

There are now many programs that will let an at home worker collaborate with his or her colleagues that are at the office. A webcam and small microphone will make it seem like an absent member is right there in the middle of a business meeting. Other programs can allow workers to collaborate on a project in a word processor or presentation creating program. An at home worker can even keep up with what’s going on in the office by following an online calendar or date book.

If your company doesn’t already utilize the Internet to allow employees to do some of their work at home, you should encourage it.  There is often a higher productivity among at-home workers as they are not forced to spend hours commuting daily and can work at a pace that fits their lifestyle. Your workplace may be the next company to join the revolution that is quickly becoming the norm among major businesses in the United States and around the world.
