Several hours later, when I had put my computer on standby to take a break, I heard some disk activity from my computer. I rushed to the computer and again found the lights on the modem violently flickering, and my computer seemed to be fully active even though it was supposed to be on standby. I tapped one of the keys to get the computer back to the active mode, and sat back to take a good look at what was happening.

What I saw nearly made me jump out of my skin. Some files were open. The mouse was moving all around, stopping for a moment here and there. Some files closed and others opened. I tried to move the mouse, but I had no control over it, it seemed to be moving by itself. What do I do without the mouse? I kept clicking the mouse, hoping it would start working. Right-click, then left-click, click, click, click, but the mouse did not follow my commands. My mind stopped working. I took a deep breath and waited, hoping it would start working again, and all the time the mouse was working on the screen, as if controlled by someone else.

After what seemed an eternity, my mind started racing again. I pushed the start button and kept it pressed, the usual command for emergency shutdown. Five seconds passed, and nothing happened. Be patient, I thought, and kept the button pressed. Even after a minute nothing happened. I was in a panic.

Of course, the weavers took note of what was happening and loathed Jacquard for costing them their jobs. The next big step for the ancient computer wouldn’t come from France, but her neighbor to the North: Great Britain. Here, a mathematician by the name of Charles Babbage would develop the Difference Engine (with monetary assistance from the government). This was the first successful automatic mechanical calculating machine, great for performing routine calculations.

Charles had a better idea though, and soon abandoned this project. He called it the Analytical Engine. With the help of his assistant, Augusta Ada King (the Countess of Lovelace from 1815 to 1842), Babbage began work on the world’s first digital computer into which instruction routines would be fed (routines created by Lady Lovelace). Babbage died before he was able to complete his work which would be carried on by his son.

The mid 1800s had been marked with manual processing of data. This was completely different from the beginning of the twentieth century where the machine controlled methods would allow for far superior speeds and in increase in accuracy and precision (due to the removal of a great deal of human error).

By 1889, the American, Herman Hollerith, inspired by Jacquard’s loom punch card machine concept, envisioned the first punch card data processing machine. The machine read the punch cards inserted into without any manual tinkering, almost eradicating errors due to people. These cards could than be stored and stacked as reservoirs of important data, and in effect, become that era’s hard drive. Thanks to Hollerith’s machine, census takers were able to complete the 1890 American Census in less than 2 months (as compared to the under eight years that had been required for the previous census). In effect, his invention led to phenomenal success and saved the American government a load of money that would pave the way for future advances.

By 1931, Vannevar Bush had developed a computer to solve differential equations, which had been impossible to calculate efficiently prior to that particular breakthrough. However, though it was capable of computing complex equations, it was a very bulky machine. With hundreds upon hundreds of different gears strewn about to represent numbers and how they would equate with one another, this model was a bit of a hassle. It was a major step though and is still hailed as such.

By 1944, Howard Aiken, who was an engineer employed by International Business Machines (IBM), produced the first ever Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (or ASCC for short). This device was also known as the Mark 1. This device, electrically powered, was a powerful replacement to Herman Hollerith’s machine which had become accessible to private companies in 1896 and had been greatly developed from there. This machine would help in the production of ballistics charts that would than be used by the United States Naval fleet in their war against the Axis forces. The computer, though presenting a major step forward, was even more cumbersome that that developed by Vannevar Bush to solve differential equations. If that was thought to be big, this computer measured at 50 feet in length and 8 feet in height. To put that in perspective, think of half a football field packed with the tallest basketball players imaginable all wearing top hats. To put it curtly, the machine was gigantic. And it’s enormity came not only in it’s size, but also in what it accomplished, solving a calculation every five seconds – a giant stride for that generation.

In 1946, the United States Government enlisted the help of academics at the University of Pennsylvania for a significant war time project. This partnership was responsible for the development of the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, better known by it’s acronym, the ENIAC. Weighing in at thirty tons, this machine put all of it’s predecessors to shame in terms of it’s bulkiness. And with great complexity comes great failure as the machine would fail every seven minutes. However, one of the major advances of this piece of machinery (certainly not energy efficiency) was that it operated using the decimal system, allowing great ease in training operators.

Soon after it’s development, a critical paper authored by John Von Neumann made several suggestions for changes as he joined the team. Firstly, he insisted that the machine use the binary numbering system (still central to computer design). This made a lot of sense – electric components generally function in essentially two conditions, on and off. This would save any overhead due to decimal or hexadecimal based computing devices. He also suggested that the computer’s data (and instructions) be stored inside the machine itself. This would be a great step forward from the previous use of punched cards which could be collected and stored in stacks.

His suggestions soon took on a practical role when he headed the development of the Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (abbrev. EDVAC). This new device had the capability of containing data and one program on board. This new technique in memory management, in addition to another highlighted feature of the machine, it’s ability to resume a previous state in spite of being shut off are great influences even today.

In 1951 for example, Remington Rand developed the Universal Automatic Computer (also known as the UNIVAC I). This machine, drawing from the breakthroughs seen in Von Neumann’s Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (the EDVAC for short) would become the first ever commercial computer in the modern sense. The machine, in comparison to previous machines that were developed for the express purposes of war or science, was a great tool for that era’s accountants and their tasks, such as paying bills and payrolls.

By 1948, an advance in a related field would become a boon for computer developers. Scientists had created the transistor, a tiny device that would soon replace cumbersome vacuum tubes in such products as televisions and radios, and soon also in computers. Advanced computer models, which had till than surpassed the weight of several cars and covered parts of football fields in their length, would shrink greatly in size.In addition to which they’d become significantly faster due to these transistors, and become more precise (smaller devices are more manageable, thus, less error prone).

By 1956, transistors began to be used in the development of public use computers. Two notable supercomputers from this era, that had banked on the development of these transistors were IBM’s Stretch and Sperry-Rand’s LARC. These computers were capable of managing insanely large amounts of data required by scientists at atomic energy development facilities and thus found eager funding from the government. These machines found a great use in the energy industry, in science and for the government. However, they were more powerful than what business demanded at that time and weren’t particularly useful for the simply calculations (in comparison) made by merchants day to day. They did require a more human centric approach however and thus the Assembly Language was developed in result.

For one thing, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (otherwise known as ICANN) is a non profit entity that assigns the internet protocol numbers upon which the internet is based. Through ICANN, domain name extensions can be made legitimate. Have you ever wondered who decided on the whole “.com” thing? That was originally created by the United States Department of Defense, but is now handled by a company called VeriSign. If not for these companies and their direction, the internet would probably be even more of a hot mess than it already is.

Another group that might interest you is the Internet Engineering Task Force, or the IETF. The IETF is a group of web designers, systems administrators, engineers and other concerned citizens who are very interested in making sure the internet continues to work, and improves to meet the growing needs of a society which is addicted to the interwebs. If you are interested in joining the IETF, you can actually do so – it is a completely open organization that welcomes anybody who cares enough to join. And who knows what kind of contribution you may be able to make? With enough computers and enough people, the web works.

A schema as powerful and extensive as the XML Schema however could not have been designed arbitrarily on the spot. Rather, documentation humbly accepts how much the schema owes to previous efforts that fell short of the success it reached. For example, there was a significant influence on the schema from such predecessors as SOX, XDR, and XML-data. In designing the present schema, the best features of previous schema were integrated while the pitfalls associated with them were ignored, leading to a final product of greater comparable efficiency and use.

In spite of this popularity which doesn’t seem on the verge of ebbing or abating any time in the near future, the schema isn’t without it’s naysayers and criticisms. For example, XML Schema lacks an ordered set of datatypes, giving users rather non-intuitive material with which to work. On top of which, though the schema does present human readable code, this isn’t done without a significant deal of difficulty. Some of the most well-cited critics of the recommended schema have proposed a number of alternatives which resolve these issues, such as RELAX NG. Only time will tell whether the XML Schema can maintain predominance, however, present forecasts are for clear sailing ahead for this schema – leading even more developers to make this choice.

Amongst the criticisms originally levied by Clark, there were those of the schema itself and those of proponents and bodies recommending it (such as the Wordlwide Web Consortium). In the second category, for example, Clark had noted that the proponents had an undeveloped understanding of XML schema and couldn’t tell the difference between two unique schema and two schema who’s relationship was more linear and co-dependent (such as RELAX NG’s evolution from Document Schema Definition Language(s) [DSDL]). Another criticism of this nature was of the proposal by XML Schema proponents that it should adapted as it is already widely used. Clark argued that this was counterproductive as the objective of schema is not populism but of providing a beneficial product – one that actually made it easier for the users to identify legal documents for the relevant applications, which he argued, XML Schema had not provided.

The alternative Clark suggested, RELAX NG, has quite a bit going for it. It’s open and democratic development background as being OASIS is just one aspect of this. Open development of schema has assured countless times that instead of producing bloated products with a heavy bias towards major sponsors, an industry useful project would be produced. The ease with which it is learned and understood being yet another. The list goes on, and it’s quite clear to see that where populism ends and efficiency begins, the industry will find far more beneficial products.

One of the major issues of contention for the global consortium to deal with are accusations, often not too far from the truth, of a disproportional role played by larger multinational corporations, often overshadowing the multitude of smaller players. The W3C has been criticized heavily, as a result, for essentially writing guidelines that match the needs of the dominant corporations while ignoring issues of concern to these smaller players. This coupled with an obstinately stubborn history of not being open for change or adaption has proven to be quite disheartening for many representatives of smaller, local interests.

A more specific example of a Worldwide Web Consortium woe would be W3C’s inability to create an HTML specification that would be adapted by the growing internet community. For example, the W3C didn’t make great efforts to deal directly with actual Web designers that would constitute the majority of those who should’ve been applying the HTML specification. All-in-all, these efforts resulted in what can’t be termed as being anything but failure, as even today, the vast majority of users don’t properly apply the specifications.

This can be considered as nothing short of a lack of communication, whereas the presence of communication is the defining feature of a consortium. Without proper support for dealing with improper implementation, W3C’s turning a blind eye to such issues led to a culture of incorrectly used HTML code (not according to specifications) which would still ultimately “work” even if not entirely appropriately or even if it provided for difficult reading, therefore, difficult changes and improvement. Summarily, this has led to the present state where though browsers can typically render, the existence at such a level of this problem could ultimately have been avoided.

For example, one or two major corporations are unable to establish industry standards as a result of their financial clout – rather, all players in the industry have fair footing to contribute to standards that will apply to them all.

In a way, the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards is not too unlike the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which happens to be the foremost international consortium for global standards online. However, one of the key features of OASIS that sets it apart from other organizations with similar overall objectives is it’s openness. Whereas the W3C is often criticized for the dominant role played by the large multinational corporations to promote standards favorable towards their own ends. It all makes OASIS’ calls for order all that much more sincere.
