How to Make Online Learning More Engaging
Online learning is a great way to increase productivity and improve the quality of education. It also offers flexibility for how, when, and where people can learn.
The key to improving how engaging an online course is by adding interactive activities that allow students to collaborate with others, take quizzes based on their performance, offer peer-to-peer teaching opportunities as well as multimedia content like video clips or animations.

Provide interactive activities in the course

You can do this by creating discussion boards, polls, quizzes, and surveys that allow them to talk with other learners around the world.

Collaborating with other learners in the course provides them opportunities to meet others who are experiencing similar struggles, ask questions they may not have thought of yet, and find support outside of you as a professor or instructor.
With collaboration comes teamwork which is how I came to meet my best friends in college online courses.
It’s how I was able to study together with them on projects, how we helped each other prepare for tests, and how they comforted me when I was stressed about how I would finish a course.
Connecting with other learners in your courses is how you create an online community!
The more connected your students feel, the more likely they will be to return for future courses.
Create an online forum for discussion and feedback
Online forums are a great way to give students the opportunity to take part in discussions with other learners as well as you, their instructor.
These can be used not only for course material but also for anything that may come up in the course.
For example, if you’re teaching an online biology course it would be helpful to create forums for how students are feeling about their health and how they can manage stress levels in the class.
While I was taking my first psychology intro courses I found that using an online forum not only helped me stay engaged with what we were learning but also how I was feeling about the material.
It’s a great way to check-in with your students and see how their overall wellness is going as well!
Give quizzes that are adaptive based on student performance
Quizzes can be another great opportunity for you, as an instructor, to assess how well your learners understand course content.
However, how can you do this without just giving them multiple choice or true/false questions?
Quizzes should be more than that and instead must assess how well students understand the material.
One way to do this is by creating adaptive quizzes where they will adjust question difficulty based on how well they answer previous questions.
For example, if a student is getting most of the questions right then they will be presented with harder content as opposed to easier items.
This lets you know how well they understand the material and how much more work you need to give them when it comes to studying.
Quizzes like this help to ensure that the content learned are relevant and useful.
Encourage peer-to-peer teaching by allowing students to create their own tutorials
One of the best parts about online learning is how much freedom you have as a student.
Students can learn not only from your lectures but how they interact with the course material and how they teach it to others.
One way that you can give students more opportunities is by allowing them to create their own tutorials, presentations, or lessons about topics they’re interested in.
This will help them become better teachers themselves as well as engage deeply with content!
For example, I had a student in one of my online courses who was taking the class with her husband.
She mentioned how they were both really interested in how to properly care for their new puppy and how they wanted to be able to share what they were learning with others.
So, instead of creating a powerpoint for the class, she decided to make one on how they were training their new puppy!
This is just another way that you can encourage your learners to become more engaged with the course material and how they can use it in their daily lives!
Use multimedia content like video clips or animations when possible
Finally, the last way you can make your online courses more engaging is by using multimedia content.
This includes videos, audio files, images, and anything else that will help bring course material to life!
Being able to see how a process works in a video or how to solve a problem with animation can help your students stay engaged and find success.
One of my favorite types of online courses to take are ones that use videos like how-to tutorials or online classes.
This is because it’s the easiest way to learn how to do something, especially if I can watch someone else do it first!
