How to Protect Your Child from Internet Predators

The Internet has provided people with the ability to connect with people from all over the world. People can expand their worldview by talking to people from other cultures, worldviews, and backgrounds. Unfortunately, the Internet also has its threats. The anonymity of the Internet makes it easy for predators to prey on unsuspecting children. Now that more children than ever use the Internet to talk to their friends, you need to know how to protect your child from the threat of Internet predators.

First, set up a computer nanny program. With these programs, you can block access to certain websites or only allow access to a restricted list of websites. Additionally, you can restrict the times that your child can access the Internet.

Keep an eye on the Internet history on your computer’s web browser. After your child is done using the computer, you can look up the websites they visited. Checking up on any questionable sites is easy, and if they are on an inappropriate website you can use it as a platform for discussion.

The most important part of protecting your child is keeping them educated. Too often, kids think that their parents’ rules are arbitrarily restrictive and mean. If you explain, in non-graphic terms, the possible consequences of talking to strangers, your child is far more likely to follow your rules.

As a last resort, set up tracking software on your computer. Keyloggers and similar programs can keep track of everything your child types. Although you shouldn’t use this for any reason other than ensuring your child’s safety, it is definitely a last resort.

By talking frequently to your child and monitoring their online activities, you can make sure that their time online is pleasant. Although they may resent your rules, your child’s safety is of the utmost importance.

Teaching Your Child to Use a Computer

Children are using computers at younger and younger ages now, and your child probably won’t be any different. In public schools, children as young as kindergarten age are being taught how to use computers and access the Internet. They generally need parental permission for this access, but that’s easily obtained for most children. Not every parent wants his or her child to be online at that age, but most don’t have any objection to it because of the supervision that the child will be given by the teachers. Of course, schools don’t always have the time to closely monitor every child.

That’s why most of the schools block sites that are suspected to be something that you wouldn’t want a child to see. They also often block searches for specific words. While this can stop some students from getting legitimate information about things that they’re supposed to be studying, it also protects them from sites that they shouldn’t be visiting. At home, you also need to keep your children safe. You’ll need to monitor the Internet use that they get involved with, and you need to be sure that they aren’t spending time chatting with people and playing games that are dangerous or inappropriate.

Learning to use the computer – just getting the basics down – isn’t really that difficult. But, learning to use it safely and properly is not the same thing. You can talk to your children all day long about it, but you also need to model those habits. You want to show that you’re responsible with your own Internet use. Don’t use your computer for things that your children shouldn’t see, and carefully protect any private or personal information or files that your computer contains.

The Dangers of the Internet

The internet has brought many changes to society. These include the ability to chat, email, network on social sites, shop, and even run a business. All of these tasks and more can be done with ease from your computer or, in some cases, your cellular phone. While the internet has obviously made the world a better place in some aspects, there is still a negative side to internet.

There are unseen dangers involved with chatting and social sites. The internet has made it possible for you to be whomever you want to be online. While most people try to maintain honest friendships and relationships online, there are unsavory types that lie. There are even criminals that use the internet as a means to determining their next victim. A popular classified ads website has come under scrutiny numerous times due to the nature of some of the ads. One individual even committed heinous acts by tracking down individuals from classified ads.

Child predators are another dangerous issue online. Since chatting is such a popular activity, it has made it easy for predators to pretend they are someone else and arrange meetings with young people. Fortunately, law enforcement officials are aware of this problem. They are taking every measure possible to stop the child predators. You can even witness some of the sting operations on documentary shows.

If you take a few precautions when using the internet, you and your loved ones can have a safe experience. Monitor your children’s activities and remind them not to reveal any personal information. When placing ads, do not disclose your address or other information until you are certain that the other party can be trusted. If ever in doubt, keep your information private. Practicing safe internet usage makes it possible to enjoy the internet without the danger.
