The Growth of the At-Home Worker

Teleworking is becoming a very important part of many offices. A few years ago, it seemed like a dream for many commuters to be able to work from home part of the time. Now this is a reality that is becoming more prevalent every day.

The concept of working from home has been around for many years, but only recently has technology moved forward to the point that much of the work that is done in an office setting can be done at home. This became a possibility almost entirely because of the Internet.

Currently, many homes are equipped with high speed Internet. This will allow the worker to log online and access their business email, and handle many communications at home. But the real advances have been in Internet software that allows true work to take place.

There are now many programs that will let an at home worker collaborate with his or her colleagues that are at the office. A webcam and small microphone will make it seem like an absent member is right there in the middle of a business meeting. Other programs can allow workers to collaborate on a project in a word processor or presentation creating program. An at home worker can even keep up with what’s going on in the office by following an online calendar or date book.

If your company doesn’t already utilize the Internet to allow employees to do some of their work at home, you should encourage it.  There is often a higher productivity among at-home workers as they are not forced to spend hours commuting daily and can work at a pace that fits their lifestyle. Your workplace may be the next company to join the revolution that is quickly becoming the norm among major businesses in the United States and around the world.

Computers, the Internet and Working from Home

Computers and the internet have made it possible for millions of people to work from home. No longer do people have to be bound by brick and mortar in order to make a living. Employees can telecommute by completing their jobs right in their home office. Everything from creating documents to customer service is possible to do from home because of computers and the internet. Many businesses are turning more and more to telecommuting for their employees to save on overhead costs. There are some businesses that are completely “virtual”, without any physical building for business.

Not only are employees reaping the benefits of the internet, many people are also self-employed from home, working as freelance writers, designers and in many other fields. With a computer and internet access, there really is very little that cannot be accomplished from home. There are websites focused on freelance work that bring clients and professionals together. These websites usually involve a client posting a job and professionals placing bids on the job. It does not matter where the client or the freelance professional are located, with a computer and the internet, the jobs are completed anywhere.

The economy is tough and being able to work from home allows people to save money on job-related expenses. For parents, the freedom to work from home lets them be with their children and save money on daycare costs. Working from home saves on fuel costs and car repairs because many people no longer have to commute to work. For many people, working from home is the best solution to earn and save money at the same time.

The ability to work from home is not going to put brick-and-mortar businesses out of commission. It takes hard work, dedication and lots of self-discipline to successfully work from home, but it is a feasible plan. Working from home is just one more of the many doorways opened up by computers and the internet.
